Probably the most difficult thing about visiting the Kasumigaseki Country Club is how to choose between Kinya Fujita's 1929 East Course or the Seiichi Inoue and Taizo Kawada's West Course, completed in 1953. Both are rated as championship standard, the East is the more famous of the two and the one that the members favour.
Kasumigaseki's East Course ranks amongst the top five courses in Japan, and is included in Golf Digest magazine's list of the top 100 golf courses in the world. At present the East course is only available to play through invitation or as a members guest.
Shortly after opening, the club invited Charles Alison, Harry Colts design partner, to make improvements to the East course. He added several large cavernous bunkers and enlarged and deepened several of the existing bunkers.
The East course at Kasumigaseki Country Club has probably the best par-three hole in Japan. The 10th hole originally had a 180-yard shot over a water hazard to a small green. Alison converted it into the famous hole is today, putting a deep bunker in front of the green to make the hole a lot more challenging.
The East course retains the traditional Japanese dual green system one is seeded with hardy Korai grass for winter play the other is seeded with bent for summer, the dual green system ensures wonderful surfaces all year round.
Like all great courses, the conditions of the fairways and greens are meticulously maintained, the picturesque surroundings are a great escape from the noise and commotion of the busy city.
The Kasumigaseki Country Club is a regular host of the Japan Open which has been held on both the East and West courses.
