The Hilton Cancun Golf Resort is located next to the beautiful Nichupte lagoon and over looking the Caribbean sea. The Resort has three separate 9-hole courses Jungle, Lakes and the new Dunes. Jack Nicholas designed all three courses using his experience in golf course design to produce three memorable courses.
The Lakes course at Moon Palace golf club was traditionally the back nine of the Championship course, the new Dunes course now give golfers a choice of which two courses to play. The lakes course as it's name suggests is dominated by large lakes sometimes bordering both sides of the fairway. The green's are well protected by strategically placed bunkers. A wide variety of tee distances make it playable for golfers of all levels, or as a championship calibre challenge for those who want to tackle the black tees. The lakes course is considered to be the easier of the three so may be the better choice for the beginner.
As is often the case with Nicklaus, the final few holes are the most challenging: No. 7 features a heroic carry off the tee to an angled fairway, letting each golfer decide how much distance to cut off from the tee. The 8th is the course's signature hole, a peninsula par-3 with water front, back and left, be prepared to loose balls. The 9th is a long par-4 that curves around a lake with water in play on both shots. Accuracy is the key element for this course any wayward shots will either find water or one of the numerous bunkers. The Bermuda grass fairways and Tifdwarf grass greens means that the playing conditions are immaculate all year round.
The Moon Palace is one of the largest hotels in North America outside of Las Vegas, the Moon Palace has more than 2,000 rooms, but it does an excellent job of spreading out guests so it never appears crowded. There are multiple swimming pools, bars and a dozen restaurants. The Hotel is All Inclusive so all food, beverages, including alcohol, are included in the price.
The beauty of the Moon Palace is that its location and wealth of activities make it perfect for either a quick weekend escape from the States or as a week long vacation destination. Cancun is also becoming a popular destination for European golfers. The Golf Club offers equipment and cart hire, the carts are fitted out with GPS, this is a new user friendly feature with exact distancing, electronic scoring, live tournament leader board, food and beverages ordering and more. Besides golf, the resort itself offers SCUBA diving, Tennis, fitness facilities and great beaches.
If you are here for longer, you can take advantage of myriad local activities, including the stunning Mayan ruins at Tulum, Coba and Chichen Itza, with their pyramids and temples. There is also Cancun itself, including the strip of resort hotels and shops, the pedestrian friendly down-town of "Old" Cancun, and the quaint fishing village of Playa del Carmen. The nearby island of Cozumel offers an additional wealth of shops, restaurants and some of the world's best diving.
