Nothing reflects the natural beauty and diverse landscape of Qatar more than Doha Golf Club. Designed by Peter Harradine and opened in 1997, the 7355-yard 18-hole Championship Course and floodlit 9-hole Academy Course provide a variety of challenges that will appeal to golfers of all standards. Doha Golf Club is venue for the Qatar Masters, the final event in the Middle East leg of the European Tour. It is widely regarded as the best course in the Gulf.
Lush fairways, greens and water hazards dominate an area which only a decade ago was a barren desert landscape. During the transformation from desert to golf course 1,300 palm trees, 10,000 trees and 5,000 shrubs were planted together with 65 cacti imported from the Arizona desert.
Doha is laid out over desert and dunes land with 8 artificial lakes on the course, adding a lot of extra hazards and variety to a great lay out. Doha is long, tough and superbly manicured, making the course a real pleasure for long-hitters. Numerous imposing limestone rock formations and an abundance of lush green fairways present a startling contrast to the desert that lies beyond. The standard of the course has won unanimous praise from both PGA European and Asian Tour players and officials.
Each of the 18 holes varies dramatically in character, of which the 9th and the 18th are true giants measuring 639 yards and 587 yards respectively. Of the par 4 holes; the 5th, 6th, 11th, 14th and 15th are all outstanding tests ranging between 400 and 500 yards in length.
To compliment the unique championship course, there is a 9 hole Academy Course measuring 2,544 yards that looks over the West Bay Lagoon. Three par 3 holes, five par 4 holes and one par 5 hole, which are perfect for beginners and those looking to fine tune their game.
Doha Golf Club has hosted the prestigious Qatar Masters tournament since 1998, which is held in January as part of the European and Asian PGA tours schedule, with Doha's Championship Course proving to be one of the longest par 72 courses on the tour.
