The new world class championship course at the San Roque Club opened in 2004, and after hosting the Spainish Open in 2006, has been labelled as one of the best new golf courses in Europe. Measuring 7246 yards from the championship tees, the New Course winds through mature cork oak trees and aims to complement The Old Course, while presenting a very different challenge.
Course designer Perry Dye, son of the illustrious Pete Dye, built the course to incorporate the contours of the San Roque hills, giving golfers magnificent views of the Guadalquiton River with the Mediterranean Sea in the background.
The design principal was to build a course that provides a stern challenge for scratch and low handicap golfers but is also possible for higher handicap golfers to play and enjoy. Each hole has five different tee positions to accommodate all standards of golfer.
With wider fairways than the Old Course there is more opportunity to open your shoulders off the tee, but they are designed to reward good tactics and skilful drive placement. Water hazards are present guarding four of the greens, which are also defended by more than a hundred strategic bunkers.
Like the Old Course, the New Course features fast and true putting surfaces that can be tricky to judge the distance of your putts.
Coupled with the fantastic Spainish weather the New Course is shaping up to help make the San Roque Club one of the top golfing resorts in Europe.
