Few approaches to golf clubs are as grand as the entrance to the 2,000-acre Boxwood Estate. Driving through the Golden Gates of Boxwood Golf & Country Club, you enter a golfing haven.
Set within 'Capability' Brown's Great Park and the estate of Bowood House and Gardens, lies the championship golf course carefully designed by Dave Thomas, architect of the Belfry. Thomas' brief was to design a course to be enjoyed by golfers of all abilities, and has been voted among the top ten new courses in Britain and top fifty golf destinations in Europe by Golf World Magazine.
Despite its agricultural nature, this is a superb golf course kept in immaculate condition, making best use of the estates mature woodland. There is a fair amount of water, generous fairways and plenty of opportunities to play safe. There is a lovely sense of peace and spaciousness at Bowood. The course gives a genuine feeling of getting away from the stresses and strains of modern life.
Bowood's length is extraordinary; measuring a monstrous 7,300 yards from the back tees. During the winter the course has a tendency to get wet, and plays every inch of its length.
Bowood competes for length as well as difficulty with the toughest championship courses. Numerous tree and water barriers, together with strategically placed bunkers, ensure that you have more to think about than just cutting the corners on the doglegs.
With a range of tees on every hole, the higher handicapped golfer is not overwhelmed by too difficult a course, yet from the back tees in events which include the European Challenge Tour Championships, even the greatest from the professional ranks find this stunning course a challenging test of their skills.
