Burnham Beeches Golf Club is situated on the edge of the historical and well-known Burnham Beeches, situated on the edge of the Thames Valley. Founded in 1891, the course is one of the oldest in the region, set in a wonderful location where the beech trees of the surrounding wood give the club its name.
Burnham Beeches golf course is classic parkland layout which measures 6,449 yards from the back tees, has a Par of 70 (SSS 71) and offers a true and challenging test of golf. The layout of the holes is varied, providing numerous different wind directions throughout the course. The course has some big undulations but is by no means a hard walk and many of the holes have some great views to take in.
There is a good mix of testing par 3's and seemingly straight forward par 4's but you need to make sure your shots are well placed to avoid either the fairway hazards or being blocked out for your approach shots.
The course appears deceptively wide and generous, but there are many places on this course that golfers don't want to visit. The deep woods lining the 14th fairway have claimed many balls, while holes such as the 2nd and the 18th have out of bounds running their entire length on the right hand sides.
The 10th hole is quite famous in the region for its carnivorous railway sleeper bunker. The bunker is 8 foot deep with railway sleepers lining its face. A good tip from the locals is to use your putter to bounce the ball up the sleepers and onto the green.
A well presented course that requires some imagination to play is well worth the visit if you get the chance.
