Woburn is renowned for holes that play through avenues of pines. Nowhere is this truer than on the Duchess'. Of the three Woburn courses, the Duchess' is the one that puts a high premium on the ability to hit the ball straight, making the Duchess' not so favourable to the big hitters. The golfer who pulls driver from the bag on every par-4 or 5 is in for a big shock. The course will strike fear into you on more occasions with the tee shots than both of the other courses combined.
Ranked as one of the top 75 courses in the British Isles, the Duchess course at Woburn Golf Club is a fine example of a golf course built for the thinking golfer. The natural characteristics of each hole require a number of different strategies which provide a truly testing golf challenge.
Slightly shorter in length than the Duke's course at 6,651 yards, the Duchess course is cut from pine forests. Its rolling fairways and subtle contours are deceptively landscaped to test the golfer's full repertoire of shots. Charles Lawrie created a course that calls for a different sort of challenge to the one he presented when he laid out the Duke's course.
As with all world class golf courses, the Duchess' can be conquered. The Duchess' is a layout that demands strategy and creativity. Anyone who plays the course will find the trees at some point in their round and the key to the Duchess' is to minimise the potential disasters when they happen. Anyone who can do this and keep their patience will be best suited to handle the challenge of the Duchess'.
The Duchess' is not just the third course at Woburn Golf Club, but a championship layout in its own right. The Marquess' may be the jewel in the Woburn crown, the Duke's the course that has made Woburn famous, but the Duchess' is the jewel in the crown.
