Royal Lytham & St Anne's Golf Club is situated in Lytham St Anne's, just outside Blackpool on England's West coast. The Golf Club was founded in 1886 originally constructed on some land leased from the St Anne's on sea Land and building Company and moved to the present site in 1897. The clubhouse was funded by the 750 members, positioned behind the 18th green, the grand Victorian clubhouse, with its oak-panelled dining room, offers a welcome respite from the elements. Royal Lytham St Anne's Golf Club is recognised as one of the best links courses in the world, often ranked in the Worlds top 50, it has been host to ten Open Championships, two Ryder Cups and numerous other major tournaments including the Women's and Seniors Open Championships.
The layout of Royal Lytham & St Anne's has remained faithful to the original created by the clubs first professional, George Lowe, over a century ago. The only significant changes were made in 1919 when the club asked Harry Colt, one of the most celebrated course designers of the time to make recommendations for improvement. Over the next four years he repositioned some of the greens, tees, added numerous bunkers and lengthened the course.
1926 was a significant year for the club, not only did it host its first Open, but King George V gave his approval, adding the word 'Royal' to the club's title just in time for the championship to start. The legendary American, Bobby Jones, won the 1926 Open, one of the most talented and successful amateur golfers of all time.
Royal Lytham St Annes is a links in every sense of the word, with sandy soil and the wind blowing in from the Irish Sea, it does not however have the traditional links dunes. At first site the layout of the course seems rather benign, but cross winds can make judgement of distances extremely difficult. The golf course is famed for it's bunkers of which there are over 200, sometimes there positioning can seem out of place. Depending on the direction of the wind they are all strategically positioned to catch the misplaced or wayward shot.
The course is well designed, with holes to test every level of player. It opens with a Par 3, the only major championship course to do so. The first four holes and last five are said to be amongst the toughest in Britain. Open to the elements, the trees on the course almost permanently lean sideways, with the wind often proving a formidable competitor in the homeward five holes of the course. Holes 16 to 18 have produced some of the most memorable moments in major championship history, 16 is the scene of Seve's famous car park shot 1979.
