The Ailsa is one of Scotland's premier Open Championship venues while its junior neighbour, the Kintyre, formerly the Arran, is still establishing its reputation. The Arran course was opened in 1909, just like the Ailsa it was rebuilt by Mackenzie Ross after World War II. The Kintyre course opened in 2001 designed by Donald Steel it is more or less a new course with only a remnants of the old Arran upon which it was built.
Building on the challenges laid down by the old Arran course, the Kintyre is links golf at its finest. There are large undulating greens, sublime fairways bordered by thick rough and magnificent ocean holes, all with stunning views of Kintyre, Arran, and the famous Turnberry Lighthouse. With a par of 72 and a length of 6827 yards the Kintyre course is certainly challenging for golfers of all abilities. The view that greets you from the brow of Bain's Hill is just one view amongst many you'll want to savour.
The Kintyre Course at Turnberry is by no means a second course having hosted the 2004 Open Final Qualifying. The redevelopment of the old Arran course has resulted in an extremely tough course that threads it's way through gorse over the first 7 holes. Position off the tee is crucial here as any mis hit shots head for a prickly landing, or one of the many strategically placed fairway bunkers. Holes 7 through10 are the change from links to more parkland.
The course is marginally longer and in part more elevated than the Ailsa so the wind, which is always a factor on the Ailsa is of even more significance on the Kintyre. The holes 8 through 11 are especially high and open to the elements. The signature 8th hole, Kintyre's Cove is just 306 yards on the card, a short Par 4 but it's one of the best risk and reward holes in world golf. The fairway drops 50 feet to a green which is enclosed in a sheltered cove.
You don t have to be a golfer to enjoy Turnberry the Spa provides you with the perfect place to relax and chill out. The facilities include a Swimming pool with loungers and a separate children's pool. There are three saunas and a jacuzzi and for the more energetic a gym and squash courts. Horse riding is always popular with guests of all ages, you can go riding along the beach or a more challenging ride trekking up the surrounding hills.
