The new Montgomerie Course at Celtic Manor Resort will open in the summer of 2007. The former Coldra Woods golf course has undergone major revisions as the resort continues its redevelopment plans ahead of the 2010 Ryder Cup. The course has been redesigned by European Golf Design and Ryder Cup star, Colin Montgomerie.
The existing 18 hole course is to be remodelled to create nine holes using, as far as possible, the present tee and green sites. These nines holes will then link up with the remaining holes from the Wentwood Hills Golf Course, which are not being used as part of the Ryder Cup Course, to create a new 18 hole golf course.
The Montgomerie Course will be 6,369 yards, par 69. Colin Montgomerie is a great believer that hazards, especially bunkers, should not be placed for visual effect but should effectively cost a player a half-shot penalty, whether they are placed by the fairway or near the green. This attitude is noticeable in the style of bunkering that Montgomerie has adopted and should make the course a real test for golfers of all abilities.
The Wentwood Hills Course hosted five Celtic Manor Wales Open tournaments between 2000 and 2004.
