The Celtic Manor Resort offers three world-class golf courses, the Roman Road championship course, with two new 18-hole courses - the Ryder Cup Course and The Montgomerie - set to open in summer 2007, The resort also features a world-class golf academy with a floodlit driving range, practice range, golf shop and teaching bays and a luxurious golf clubhouse which is one of the largest in Europe. The Lodge has its own bar, restaurant, health club and spa.
This relatively new Celtic Manor resort has quickly become a world-renowned venue for golf, set in 1400 acres of beautiful, unspoiled. Celtic Manor offers a challenge for all levels of play.
The Roman Road course, the first of the Resort's courses, opened in 1995 and was ranked 'the top inland course in Wales' by Golf Monthly Magazine. Overlooking the Severn Estuary with views across to Somerset and Devon, it was designed by Robert Trent Jones Snr and is named after the many Roman roads that criss-cross it.
In 1997, £300,000 was invested in under-soil drainage. It has around 15 miles of perforated pipes laid under the fairways to take water away and provide superb conditions all year round. With some fairly long walks between greens and tees and deep rough in which to lose plenty of balls, Celtic Manor say the time suggested for a round should be no more than five and half hours.
The Roman Road course was the host venue in 2005 and 2006 for both The Celtic Manor Wales Open and the star-studded All*Star Cup, which over the two years of the event has featured many high profile celebrities.
In 2010, The Celtic Manor Resort will host the 38th Ryder Cup. It will be played on the new Ryder Cup Course, purposely designed for this prestigious tournament. The new course will feature nine holes from the original Wentwood Hills course and nine spectacular new holes in the valley of the River Usk.
