Construction of the venue for the 2010 Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor Resort, set over 1400 acres in the Usk valley in South Wales, began in May 2005. European Golf Design have created nine new holes (1st - 5th and 14th, 15th, 16th and 18th) that have been developed along the floor of the Usk Valley, as well as nine holes from the former Wentwood Hills Championship Course that have been extensively remodelled (6th - 13th and 17th) to create more challenge and visual interest.
The construction of the golf course was a huge undertaking involving over 600,000 cubic metres of earth movement. The designs also included the creation of large spectator viewing areas, hospitality platforms and tented village space, specially designed to host the Ryder Cup.
In addition to all the Ryder Cup and tournament requirements extensive ecological and historical issues had to be respected and enhanced.
The course has been designed to start and finish in the Usk Valley, with the hillsides providing a panoramic amphitheatre from which to view the entire course. There will be space for up to 50,000 spectators to follow each match, with the redesigned course having only one spectator crossing.
The finished 7,459 yard, par 71 course presents players with the challenge of 70 bunkers and four lakes. The course features six signature holes (the 3rd, 5th, 6th, 14th, 15th and 18th), each of which features a formidable water hazard.
The Ryder Cup course will be fully open for play in 2007.
