Described as a "super course" by leading sections of the golfing press, the 162 hectares of the Abu Dhabi Golf Club features one of the finest world-class 27-hole championship golfing facilities in the Middle East. Abu Dhabi Golf Club is 20 minutes from the city centre and 10 minutes from Abu Dhabi International airport.
Carved straight out of the desert and requiring over 2 million litres of water a day, the club offers an 18 hole championship layout as well as a superb 9 hole course. Overlooking the course is the impressive clubhouse built in the shape of a falcon, with it's out-stretched wings. The club also boasts 3 restaurants, snooker rooms, swimming pool, state-of-the-art gym, 4 floodlit tennis courts, 2 glass-backed squash courts, sauna, steam rooms and a jacuzzi.
The championship course at Abu Dhabi Golf Club was designed by Peter Harradine, who also designed the championship course at Doha Golf Club in neighboring Qatar. Planting had begun way back in 1992, accounting for the well-established look the Club presented even on the day of its inauguration in October 2000.
The championship course is home to the PGA European Tour Abu Dhabi Golf Championship, the largest and most prestigious sporting event in the UAE capital. The inaugural tournament was played in January 2006, with Chris DiMarco taking the honors. A record crowd witnessed one of Europe's leading golfers, Paul Casey, lift the trophy in 2007.
The championship course, weaves through undulating terrain that features pockets of palms, ornamental trees and shrubs, as well as seven spectacular saltwater lakes. The course provides a tough but fair challenge, with lush fairways, 90 strategically placed bunkers and generous but lighting fast greens.
