In 2007 Golf Digest listed The Pines course at The International Golf Club as the second toughest golf course in America. While it may be only the second toughest it is definitely the longest measuring a massive 8326 yards from the Tiger Tees. Although it is not on the PGA calender it is a must for any big hitter.
In 1901, Runaway Brook Golf Club Corporation purchased 66 acres of open farmland on which they constructed a 9 hole golf course. In 1954 Bert Suprenant purchased Runaway Brook G.C., then hired the golf course designer Geoffrey Cornish to design the new Pines course.
I.T.T. Purchased the club in 1961 and in 1967 changed the name of the club to the The International Golf Club. In 1972, Robert Trent Jones Sr was hired to modify most of the greens and he also increased and modified the bunkers making it not only one of the longest courses in the world but one of the most difficult.
The closing hole is 656 yards and is not even the longest par 5 on the course, the third hole par-5 at 674 yards holds that honour. There's also a par 6, the 715-yard fifth hole, and the par-3 seventh is 277 yards but don't worry the green is 91 yards long, and the 11th a modest 590-yard par 5, has 24 bunkers. The Pines is not only for the long hitter, the course offers multiple teeing areas for players of all skill levels.
In 2001 the International added a new course, the Tom Fazio designed masterpiece known as The Oaks. The Oaks is a Championship standard course measuring a more modest 6944 yard from the competion tees and Par 72. The International also offers a massive, state of the art practice facility, complete with a huge range, multiple practice greens and practice bunkers. The highly acclaimed golf academy provides golfers of all levels a 'full immersion' learning experience by averaging the latest technologies and, of course, the prodigious practice facility.
The membership at The International fits its name: members come from more than 70 Massachusetts towns, 16 states and four foreign countries, including Japan. Out-of-town members have the luxury of staying right on club property in the cosy, 50 room lodge. Thanks to the club's extensive conference and banquet facilities, combined with its four-star cuisine.
