The Kiawah Island Golf Resort is one of the most highly acclaimed in the world. Kiawah Island is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and separated from the South Carolina mainland by the Kiawah River on the west. It has five spectacular golf courses which are led by the famed Ocean Course, site of the Ryder Cup's "War by the Shore" in 1991.
Course architect, Pete Dye, used the natural beauty of Kiawah's seaside environment to develop an old links look, reminiscent of the celebrated seaside links courses of the UK. The Ocean Course is one of Pete Dye's most superb designs, bringing the course worldwide attention.
The Ocean Course has 10 holes that play directly along the beach, more than any other golf course in the Northern Hemisphere. It covers more than two miles of oceanfront dunes, with sandy wasteland everywhere and the near-constant wind can destroy the best of rounds. Probably few golf courses in the world, outside of the United Kingdom and Ireland, are affected as much by the wind as the Ocean Course.
From one round to the next, a player can experience up to an 8-club difference on holes depending upon the direction and strength of the wind. This was highly evident during the 1991 Ryder Cup. During the relatively benign practice rounds, players hit 7 and 8-irons into the treacherous par-3 17th hole. By Sunday, with a strong wind in their face, players were hitting 3-woods.
Playing the changing winds at The Ocean Course requires a tremendous amount of ingenuity, imagination and adaptation in shot making. Players will need to adjust their game to match the conditions around them more so than on any other course in the U.S. This is a course that will require a player to utilise every club in their bag.
Mainly due to the ever changing conditions and the fact that playing from the tournament tees, the course measures an astonishing 7,356 yards, Golf Digest have named it America's Toughest Resort Course. Despite being a brutal test of golf from the back tees, Golf Digest has also named it as one of the top 10 public courses in the nation.
As well as hosting the 1991 Ryder Cup, the World Golf Championships World Cup came here in 2003, the Senior PGA Championship will be played here in 2008, and the Ocean Course will host the PGA Championship for the first time in 2012.
