Host to the 2008 Ryder Cup, The Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky was built to be a world-class golf course designed for hosting major golf championships. I In 1981 Dwight Gahm, a Louisville entrepreneur and golf lover, commissioned Jack Nicklaus to design and build a private golf facility on a 489 acres site, 20 miles east of Louisville.
Jack Nicklaus, described the site as a "golf designer's dream because there is a variety of terrain, vegetation and water to work with. Everything necessary for an excellent golf course is here: room for wide, tree lined fairways and spectacular golf holes."
After considering 40 different potential course routings, construction began and the final layout opened for play in June of 1986. The final draft of the Valhalla layout resulted in two very different nines that blend together into a distinctive whole.
Valhalla's outward nine holes embrace a Scottish-links style ambience. Wide, gently contoured fairways meander through an open valley. Surrounding the fairways are numerous mounds and lush collars of Kentucky bluegrass, which not only add definition, but serve to tame the long hitters.
Nicklaus designed the slick bent grass putting surfaces in typically modern style, ranging from medium to large sizes, averaging 6,500 square feet. In typical Nicklaus style the greens are well guarded by a number of different hazards throughout the course. Bunkers, water hazards, scooped-out grassy hollows and mounded swatches of lush bluegrass rough defend the greens.
The putting surfaces are fast and undulating, and are often partitioned into distinct areas making the "large" greens seem somewhat smaller. A premium is placed on creative shot making and on skilful chipping and putting. Measuring 7,305 from the gold tees, with a par of 72, Valhalla represents a tough golfing challenge.
Valhalla Golf Club was named one of the top three new private golf courses in the United States in 1987 and twenty years later continues to be the top ranked golf course in Kentucky and is considered one of "America's 100 Greatest Courses" according to Golf Digest. Valhalla also hosted the 1996 and 2000 US PGA Championships.
In preparation for the 2008 Ryder Cup, Jack Nicklaus has been recalled to make some modifications to the course to make it even more challenging for the US and European Teams. Some of the numerous renovations include green reconstruction, bunker additions, foliage removal and refurbishment of the clubhouse.
